Dodging raindrops

Capturing the essence of a fleeting moment of time requires speed of hand, to achieve spontaneity.

As far as teaching is concerned I think it is important to pass on gifts and talents, to share with others, and to sustain the life of the wonderful medium of watercolours.

A student says:
"Patient teaching, wonderful work, charismatic demos."

A canal surrounded

The light in its many guises and the drama of fleeting impressions are important factors when I am looking at the world.

A student says:
"We really appreciate having an artist of your calibre, both as a practitioner and a teacher, to give us so much of your precious time – it is a great experience."

Life in the Shallows

As we journey through life there are changes to our lives and to the world we live in. Because as an artist I have received so much from the beauty of nature and all that it offers, I need to put something back.

A student says:
"David is a great communicator." "A wonderful, inspiring experience."

Watercolours

David is one of Australia's leading watercolourists and is renowned internationally for his painting and teaching.

He served a six-year apprenticeship with a photo engraving firm as a color etcher and engraver and he’s applied what he learned about colour and composition to his own watercolour work.

David’s 40-year painting career has earned him more than 100 awards and his paintings are in collections all over the world. He’s held regular one-man exhibitions of his work since 1975. In each exhibition he expresses his love of working freely on location and his love of spontaneity, shape, light and colour. He is inspired by subjects that convey atmosphere, mood and feeling.

There have been many varying influences on his painting journey and he aspires to the Impressionist Monet, Turner, and the expressive John Singer Sargent, to name but a few. David says: “It is of high importance for me to say more with less…to discard the inessential…to be simple and poetic not only in the treatment of the subject but in the technical manner of the painting.”
